System Requirements for FE-Web Client
(Last Updated: 15 September 2010)
(A) PC Configuration
Each EFS Front-End PC is recommended to have the following configuration and accessories, in general. However, the PC should meet the recommended hardware requirements of the operating system (e.g. MS Windows®) and third party software (e.g. Adobe® Acrobat®) used.
- Minimum: Pentium 4 PC with 512 MB of RAM
- Disk Space Requirement
The minimum free hard disk space required for EFS is 10 GB.
- Disk space required for temporary files during sending/receiving a submission = (3 x Size of the submission) in the drive where EFS FE-Web working folder is created (which must be a local drive C: or D:).
- Additional free hard disk space is required if source and reply PDF documents are stored on the FE client PC locally. It is highly recommended that a separate physical/logical drive (e.g. D: drive) or network shared drive (e.g. F: drive) be used to store your PDF files.
- PC should have at least 1 available USB port or Serial (RS-232) port (read the following section for more details).
-
Smartcard reader
A smartcard reader is needed to file EFS documents. The following card reader models are supported:
- ADC E-Key LC
- GemPC Twin USB
- GEMPLUS GemPC 410-SL
- SCM Microsystems SCR3310
Refer to the following table to determine which smartcard reader model to use with your EFS PC.

EFS supported smartcard readers may be purchased from these Vendors.
Adaptor cables (if needed) may be purchased from any PC hardware/cable store (at Funan IT Mall or Sim Lim Square)

(B) Operating System and Third Party Software Needed
EFS Front-End application requires the following third party software installed in the PC:
-
Operating System: Windows 2000 (Professional Edition), Windows XP (Home/Professional Edition), Windows Vista (Business Edition) and Windows 7(Home/Professional/Ultimate Edition).
No other platforms or operating systems (e.g. Linux, MacOS, etc.) are currently supported.
Note:
1. [Windows 7]: As at 15/9/2010, EFS FE can run on Windows 7. However, please check if your PC hardware and software
are compatible with and work efficiently on Windows 7. If your PC was previously installed with Windows Vista, you should have no problem upgrading to Windows 7.
(Read this article
before upgrading to Windows 7. You may also consult your IT/PC vendors.)
Please read this if you encounter problems accessing the Front-End application web pages.
2. [Windows Vista]: As at 1/9/2007, EFS FE can run on Windows Vista. However, more PC hardware and software
(including EFS-FE) are compatible with and work efficiently on PCs running Windows XP with SP2.
(Read this article to find out whether Windows Vista is suitable for you.
Also read this article
before upgrading to Vista. You may also consult your IT/PC vendors.)
Please read this if you encounter problems accessing the Front-End application web pages.
3. [For Windows XP users]: Please read this if you encounter problems accessing the Front-End application web pages.
Microsoft had announced the end of support for Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows XP SP 1 with effect July 11, 2006.
(read this for more details). It is strongly recommended that your Windows OS is regularly updated with the latest fixes, patches and service pack available from the Microsoft website.
-
Web Browser: Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 only.
It is strongly recommended that your IE is regularly updated with the latest fixes, patches and service packs available from the Microsoft website.
-
Java Runtime for Applet: EFS Front-End now supports Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM).
Existing MSJVM users have an option to continue using MSJVM, but are recommended to use Sun JRE over MSJVM.
MSJVM support will end officially on 31 December 2007. For more information, please refer
to this.
-
Adobe Acrobat: 7 / 8 / 9 (Standard Edition or Professional) is needed to scan/convert/save documents in PDF format.
Important: The Courts’ EFS systems will soon be upgraded to support Adobe® Acrobat® Version 7 or 8.
In order to maintain compliance with EFS documentary standards, all EFS
users are required to upgrade to Acrobat 7 / 8 /9 (Standard or Professional
Edition). However, documents to be e-filed via EFS must be saved
in Acrobat 7 (PDF 1.6) format, while Courts and law firms are being upgraded to Acrobat 7 (as at October 2006).
Read this instruction on how to save documents in Acrobat 7
/ 8 / 9 (PDF 1.6) format used in EFS. Adobe Acrobat Reader
(currently available for free at www.adobe.com) may be used on those PCs where PDF documents are opened for
viewing only.
EFS Front-End now supports Acrobat 9 . Users may install either Acrobat 7 / 8 / 9. Those who have installed Acrobat 7 may now upgrade to Acrobat 8 / 9, but it is not compulsory.
It is strongly recommended that your Acrobat is regularly updated with the latest fixes, patches and service packs available
from the Adobe website.
-
Microsoft Word: MS Word or similar word processing software may be used to draft the documents to be e-filed.
-
Pop-up Blocker: If you've enabled any Pop-up blocker in your system, you'll need to configure it to allow pop-up windows from the EFS websites.
(C) Internet Connection
The following communication link is required to access FE-Web Application through the Internet:
-
Internet access through a local Internet Service Provider (ISP)
– Broadband connection (such as ADSL/DSL, Leased Line or Cable) is highly recommended
– Hardware/Software configuration as required by the ISP is to be catered for.
NOTE: PC Sharing for FE-Web Client
It is possible (though not recommended) for two or more law firms to share the same set of PC to use FE-Web, as long as
each firm is a valid EFS subscriber with a unique account. However, to avoid potential confusion and mix-up, law firms are
strongly encouraged to use own client PC (with its individual local settings) as far as possible.
Important Notes on PC Sharing:
- When sharing a PC, only one firm may use the PC and FE-Web at any given time.
-
“Reply PDF Path” setting (e.g. D:\efsweb\pdf\) of the firms must be valid paths on the shared PC. This setting should be
different for each firm, so that each firm’s reply PDF files are stored in a separate folder. If the pathname used by
any firm does not exist in the shared PC, there will be errors during processing.
-
It is the sole responsibility of each firm sharing the PC to properly manage the source and
reply PDF files stored in the shared PC.
